Winter Golf Trips in Scotland – Pros, Cons, and Tips

Summer might steal the spotlight, but winter golf trips in Scotland offer something special: peaceful fairways, uncrowded tee sheets, and incredible value. While the weather is cooler and the daylight shorter, seasoned travellers know that Scotland’s links courses are often in playable condition year-round. In fact, many locals play just as often in winter as they do in summer. At ProScot Golf, we help you make the most of the off-season—booking weather-friendly layouts, cosy accommodations, and warm experiences like whisky tastings and spa retreats. If you’re considering a winter golf getaway, this blog outlines the pros, cons, and expert tips to ensure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons.

The Pros of Winter Golf in Scotland

  • Lower prices: Green fees and accommodations drop significantly during the off-season (November–March).
  • Course availability: Easier to get on iconic courses, including tee times at sought-after venues like Kingsbarns or North Berwick.
  • Quiet conditions: No crowds, no queues—enjoy the course at your own pace.
  • Cultural extras: Winter is perfect for whisky tours, castle visits, and festive activities.
  • Cosy atmosphere: Stay in boutique lodges, curl up by log fires, and enjoy hearty local food after your round.

The Cons of Winter Golf (and How to Manage Them)

  • Shorter daylight hours: Plan early tee times—Scotland sees only 6–7 hours of usable daylight in midwinter.
  • Cooler weather: Temperatures range from 0°C to 8°C. Pack warm, waterproof layers.
  • Potential frost delays or temporary greens: Choose coastal links courses with excellent drainage (see below).
  • Some inland courses may close or have restrictions.

ProScot Tip: We only schedule rounds on courses that stay open and in top condition through winter—so you’ll never arrive at a closed gate.

My son and I took a wonderful Golf and Whiskey Tour in Scotland through ProScot Golf Tours Ltd. The proprietors, John and Nicola, did an amazing job planning and executing our tour. They recommended great golf courses consistent with our playing ability and arranged several personalized scotch distillery tours that let us sample some of the best scotches in scotland! We can't thank them enough for making the trip so amazing!

Highly recommend ProScot Golf Tours to be your go to when booking a trip to Scotland. John and Nicola had everything set for us and John took great care touring us around for our 5 day bucket list golf trip as we travelled from Canada. John made us feel at home and we had lots of laughs along the way. We were able to play Royal Troon, Prestwick, St Andrew’s Old Course and Carnoustie. ProScot had our hotel and dinner reservations in advance, food was great, everything was on schedule. Sprinter van was new and clean for our travels. Excellent trip for us start to finish!! Thanks again John and Nicola! We will be back…

ProScot (John & Nicola) were amazing! Super communicative, responsive, accommodating, and overall wonderful people who made our bucket list Scotland golf trip a smashing success full of memories without any of the hassle. We priced out a few group operators and not only was ProScot the best price, but they had amazing access to courses, restaurants, and felt like they knew everyone who worked at every course. Pickup/Dropoff from golf everyday was on-time, seamless, full of banter and the vans were perfect, couldn't ask for more. 100% would book with them again and have already referred over a couple people.
