St Andrews Is Not Enough: Building a Better Scotland Golf Trip Around It
St Andrews is the reason most golfers come to Scotland.
That first image, the Old Course, the Swilcan Bridge, the history. It’s what sparks the trip in the first place. And rightly so.
But here’s the part most groups don’t realise early enough.
If you build your entire trip around St Andrews alone, you’re missing what actually makes a Scotland golf trip memorable.
St Andrews is the anchor. It should never be the whole story.
The Old Course Reality Most Groups Don’t Expect
Let’s deal with the obvious one first.
The Old Course is not guaranteed.
Even with planning, even with experience, access often comes down to:
- ballot systems
- timing
- availability
- a bit of luck
We see a lot of groups arrive thinking:
“This is the trip. Everything depends on this one round.”
That’s a risky way to build something you’ve travelled thousands of miles for.
As PGA Professional John Scott puts it:
“If your whole trip depends on one tee time, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. The best trips still work even if that doesn’t come through.”
What Actually Makes a Great St Andrews Trip
The strongest trips we build around St Andrews all follow the same principle.
They treat it as a base, not a destination in isolation.
That means:
- staying in or near St Andrews
- playing a mix of nearby courses
- building variety into each day
Because within 20–30 minutes of St Andrews, you’ve got some of the best golf in the world.
The Courses That Complete the Experience
If you’re coming all this way, this is where the trip really comes to life.
Kingsbarns
Modern, dramatic, and consistently one of the most enjoyed rounds of the week. Coastal holes from start to finish, and a layout that suits a wide range of players.
Crail (Balcomie Links)
One of the most authentic links experiences in Scotland. Less polished, more character, and a completely different feel to the Old Course.
Lundin Links
Often overlooked, but a proper test of links golf. Firm, fast, and a favourite for groups who want something a bit less obvious.
Elie
Shorter, quirky, and full of personality. The kind of course people remember long after the trip ends.
This is where St Andrews becomes part of something bigger, not the only highlight.
The Flow of a Better Itinerary
The difference between a good trip and a great one is usually pacing.
A strong St Andrews-based trip might look like this:
- Day 1: Arrival, settle into St Andrews
- Day 2: Warm-up round (Lundin or Crail)
- Day 3: Kingsbarns
- Day 4: St Andrews (ballot or scheduled round)
- Day 5: Elie or second St Andrews course
- Day 6: Departure or optional extra round
No rushing. No unnecessary travel. Every round feels distinct.
John often says:
“You want each course to feel different. That’s what people remember, not just ticking names off a list.”
Why Groups Enjoy This Approach More
This structure solves a lot of the issues we see with first-time trips.
It:
- removes pressure from one single tee time
- creates variety across the week
- keeps travel simple and manageable
- allows groups to actually enjoy St Andrews as a town
And that last point matters more than people expect.
St Andrews isn’t just a golf venue. It’s somewhere you want to spend time. Walk the town, have dinner, enjoy a drink after the round. That’s part of the experience.
When to Move Beyond St Andrews
Once you’ve got St Andrews right, then you can look at expanding.
This is where we might introduce:
- East Lothian for another cluster of links courses
- Ayrshire for Open venues and a different coastline
- or even the Highlands if time allows
But the key is not trying to do everything at once.
Build one strong base first. Then expand if it makes sense.
The Common Mistake We See
It usually goes like this:
- “We want St Andrews”
- “We also want the Highlands”
- “And maybe Turnberry”
All within a week.
What that turns into:
- long transfers
- rushed rounds
- early starts every day
- and a group that’s more tired than they expected
It looks great on paper. It doesn’t feel great in practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you build a full trip around St Andrews alone?
You can, but it’s rarely the best approach. Adding nearby courses gives you a much better overall experience.
What if we don’t get the Old Course?
A well-built itinerary still delivers a top-tier trip with courses like Kingsbarns, Crail, and Lundin. The trip should never rely on one round.
How many days should we stay in St Andrews?
Typically 3–4 nights works well as part of a wider trip.
Are the nearby courses as good as St Andrews?
Different, but just as enjoyable in many ways. Variety is what makes the trip memorable.
Build Around St Andrews, Don’t Limit Yourself to It
St Andrews will always be the heart of a Scotland golf trip.
But the trips that stay with people are the ones that go beyond it.
The mix of courses. The pace of the week. The way everything fits together.

Excellent
Just returned from an amazing trip. John and team took care of everything from trip planning, accommodations, transport, and reservations for a group of 8. We played 8 fantastic courses in 7 days. Hotel and dinner selections were great, and the transport was comfortable. The team did a very nice job making adjustments where needed (ie., flight delays, adding on rounds of golf). I would definitely recommend ProScot for your group trip.
