Planning a Scotland Golf Trip for 4–8 Golfers – What Actually Works (and What Doesn’t)
There’s a big difference between a Scotland golf trip that looks good on paper and one that actually works when you land.
Most groups we speak to, especially from the US, arrive with a similar idea. Play St Andrews, add a few big-name courses, maybe squeeze in the Highlands, and fit it all into five or six days. It sounds great. It rarely plays out that way.
Planning a golf trip for 4–8 golfers isn’t just about picking courses. It’s about building something that flows, travels well, and leaves the group wanting one more round, not heading home exhausted.
After decades of organising tours across Scotland, we’ve seen what works. More importantly, we’ve seen what doesn’t.
Start With the Group, Not the Courses
Before you even look at a map, you need to understand your group.
Are you:
- a group of four looking for a tighter, premium experience
- eight golfers wanting value, variety, and a bit of energy
- mixed handicaps or all single figures
- early risers or more relaxed in the mornings
These details shape everything.
As PGA Professional John Scott often says:
“The best trips aren’t built around the courses, they’re built around the group. Get that right and everything else falls into place.”
Too many itineraries start with a wishlist of courses and try to force a group into it. That’s where problems begin.
The 3-Round Rhythm That Actually Works
Here’s one of the biggest mistakes we see.
Trying to play:
- 36 holes in a day
- or 5 rounds in 4 days
- or stacking early tee times back-to-back
It looks efficient. It isn’t enjoyable.
The sweet spot for most groups of 4–8 is:
- 1 round per day
- occasional 36-hole day only if travel is minimal
- built-in breathing room (lunch, drinks, town time)
Scotland’s courses demand more from you. Wind, terrain, walking, and concentration all add up.
John puts it simply:
“Links golf will test you in ways you don’t expect. You want to enjoy it, not survive it.”
Stop Trying to Cover the Whole Country
Scotland isn’t big, but golf travel here is not as quick as it looks on a map.
A common mistake:
- St Andrews
- Highlands
- Ayrshire
- all in one week
That’s hours in vans instead of time on the course.
What works better is regional focus:
Option 1: Fife + East Lothian
St Andrews, Kingsbarns, Crail, Gullane, North Berwick
Option 2: Ayrshire Cluster
Turnberry, Royal Troon, Prestwick, Western Gailes
Option 3: Highlands Experience
Royal Dornoch, Castle Stuart, Nairn
Pick one or two regions. Do them properly.
St Andrews Is the Anchor, Not the Whole Trip
Every group wants St Andrews. Rightly so.
But building your entire trip around the Old Course is where many plans fall apart.
Reality:
- Old Course tee times are not guaranteed
- ballot systems can be unpredictable
- demand is global
What works is:
- treating St Andrews as part of a wider Fife itinerary
- adding Kingsbarns, Crail, and Lundin Links
- ensuring the trip still delivers even if the ballot doesn’t
When it does come through, it becomes the highlight. Not the only reason the trip works.
Travel Time Matters More Than You Think
Eight golfers, bags, transfers, early starts. It all adds up.
A two-hour transfer might not sound like much, but after a full round in Scottish conditions, it feels very different.
Strong itineraries:
- keep daily transfers under 60–90 minutes
- avoid constant hotel changes
- allow groups to settle into locations
That’s where the experience lifts. The golf becomes part of a proper trip, not a schedule.
Where Value Really Comes From
A lot of groups start with price as the main concern.
That’s understandable. But the better question is:
Where does the value actually sit?
It’s not just:
- green fees
- or hotel rates
It’s:
- how smoothly the trip runs
- access to the right courses
- transport that works for a group
- local knowledge when plans shift
From the outside, two packages can look similar. On the ground, they can feel completely different.
The Difference a Local Expert Makes
This is where most trips either come together or fall apart.
Having someone on the ground who:
- knows how courses link together
- understands travel times properly
- can adjust plans if needed
- and builds itineraries around real experience
This changes everything.
John Scott, who’s been playing links golf in Scotland for over 40 years, is often on hand to guide groups not just through the itinerary, but through the golf itself.
That’s the difference between ticking courses off a list and actually experiencing them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many golfers is ideal for a Scotland trip?
Groups of 4–8 tend to work best. Four gives flexibility, eight often unlocks better value and group dynamics.
How many rounds should we play in a week?
Typically 4–6 rounds across 5–7 days. More than that can feel rushed.
Should we try to play multiple regions in one trip?
Only if time allows. One or two regions done well is always better than trying to cover everything.
How far in advance should we start planning?
Ideally 12–18 months, especially for premium courses and peak-season travel.
Build a Trip That Works on the Ground
A Scotland golf trip should feel effortless once you arrive.
The pacing should make sense. The travel should be manageable. The golf should feel like an experience, not a checklist.
That only happens when the trip is designed properly from the start.

The tour they put together for us was incredible. Our accommodations in St Andrews we’re top notch. The golf courses were fabulous. Drivers were always on time!
They made sure we had everything we needed from snacks to drinks and were willing to be flexible in terms of schedule
They setup dinner reservations at amazing restaurants, and were able to provide advice on just about anything in the area.
What a perfect vacation with 5 beautiful days of golf. Nicola was great. She ensured we were in the Old Course balloting-system and that we were also checked in for the Old Course singles daily lottery. I was fortunate to secure two opportunities to play the Old Course. Nicola went out her way many times, including traveling back to pick me up from another course to ensure I made my Old Course check in time. She also meet up with me on the 18th tee to follow me in while taking pictures of a very memorable experience. ProScotGolf provides exceptional customer service and value. I will be planning my next trip soon.
Read moreI will be shocked if John and Nicola ever receive anything less than 5 Star ratings. My mates and I were looking for the "bucket list" golf trip to Scotland. We got an itinerary with confirmed tee times and dining reservations a year in advance. The golf courses were Turnberry, Prestwick, Royal Troon, St. Andrews Castle, THE OLD COURSE and Carnoustie. Upon arrival John promised that if anything was not to our liking to call him immediately and he would look into it. We never got a chance to test out his promise because everything went perfectly - with several positive surprises. Thanks John and Nicola for making our trip memorable.
