East Lothian Golf Trips: Championship Links Without the Chaos of St Andrews

For many golfers planning a trip to Scotland, St Andrews feels like the obvious starting point.

But there’s another region, just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, that often delivers a better overall experience.

East Lothian.

It’s known locally as Scotland’s Golf Coast, and once you’ve played here, it’s easy to see why. Championship links courses, minimal travel, and a balance that suits both first-time visitors and returning groups.

If St Andrews is the headline, East Lothian is where the trip often comes together.

Why East Lothian Works So Well

The strength of East Lothian isn’t just the courses.

It’s how easily everything fits.

Within a small stretch of coastline, you’ll find:

  • multiple world top-100 courses
  • a mix of historic and modern links
  • short travel times between rounds

That last point is what sets it apart.

As PGA Professional John Scott often says:
“You can play three or four completely different links courses here without ever feeling like you’re travelling. That’s rare.”

The Core Courses You Build Around

This is where East Lothian becomes one of the strongest regions in Scotland.

North Berwick (West Links)

One of the most distinctive courses in the world.

Stone walls, blind shots, and natural quirks that make every hole memorable. It’s not just about scoring here, it’s about experiencing the design.

Gullane No. 1

A championship test with elevation, views, and a layout that rewards solid ball striking.

It’s hosted major events and still feels approachable for a wide range of players.

Muirfield

One of the most respected courses in the game.

Traditional, structured, and strategically demanding. Playing here feels different from anywhere else in Scotland.

Craigielaw

A more modern links course that fits perfectly into a group itinerary.

Playable, well-conditioned, and a strong option to balance out the more demanding rounds.

The Ideal Base for a Golf Trip

East Lothian gives you flexibility in how you build your trip.

You can:

  • stay by the coast in places like North Berwick
  • or base yourself in Edinburgh and travel out each day

Both approaches work.

What matters is that:

  • you’re never far from your next round
  • the travel never becomes a burden
  • the group stays in rhythm

A Simple East Lothian Itinerary

A 4–5 night trip in this region is straightforward and effective.

  • Day 1: Arrival into Edinburgh, transfer to East Lothian
  • Day 2: Craigielaw
  • Day 3: Gullane No. 1
  • Day 4: North Berwick
  • Day 5: Optional final round or Edinburgh day
  • Day 6: Departure

No long drives. No constant moving. Just golf that flows.

Why Groups of Friends Enjoy It More

For groups of 4–8, East Lothian hits a sweet spot.

You get:

  • variety across courses
  • manageable tee times
  • a relaxed pace across the week

John often says:
“It’s one of the easiest trips to get right. Everything is close, the golf is world-class, and the days just work.”

The Edinburgh Factor

This is something St Andrews can’t quite match.

Being close to Edinburgh adds another layer to the trip.

You’ve got:

  • restaurants and bars
  • historic landmarks
  • whisky experiences
  • a proper city atmosphere after golf

It’s ideal for:

  • mixed groups
  • couples travelling with golfers
  • or simply adding something extra to the trip

When to Choose East Lothian

This region works particularly well if you:

  • want top-level links golf without the pressure of St Andrews
  • prefer minimal travel between rounds
  • want access to a major city alongside your golf
  • are planning a first trip to Scotland

It’s also a strong addition to a wider itinerary, especially when paired with St Andrews.

The Common Oversight

Many groups either:

  • skip East Lothian entirely
  • or leave it as a last-minute addition

That’s usually a mistake.

In reality, it deserves to be one of the main parts of the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is East Lothian from Edinburgh?

Around 30–40 minutes, depending on where you stay.

How many courses should we play in the region?

Typically 3–4 rounds over 4–5 days works best.

Yes. It’s one of the most accessible and well-balanced regions in Scotland.

Yes, and it often works well as part of a two-region trip.

One of Scotland’s Most Reliable Golf Trips

Planning Ahead for East Lothian Golf Trips

Accommodation across East Lothian can become extremely limited during peak golf season, particularly for larger groups and chauffeur-led itineraries. If East Lothian is on your wish list, we strongly recommend speaking with ProScot Golf Tours around 12 to 18 months in advance to secure the best accommodation and golf availability possible

If you’re planning a Scotland golf trip and want a region that delivers from start to finish, ProScot Golf can help you build an East Lothian itinerary that works exactly as it should.

My son and I took a wonderful Golf and Whiskey Tour in Scotland through ProScot Golf Tours Ltd. The proprietors, John and Nicola, did an amazing job planning and executing our tour. They recommended great golf courses consistent with our playing ability and arranged several personalized scotch distillery tours that let us sample some of the best scotches in scotland! We can't thank them enough for making the trip so amazing!

Highly recommend ProScot Golf Tours to be your go to when booking a trip to Scotland. John and Nicola had everything set for us and John took great care touring us around for our 5 day bucket list golf trip as we travelled from Canada. John made us feel at home and we had lots of laughs along the way. We were able to play Royal Troon, Prestwick, St Andrew’s Old Course and Carnoustie. ProScot had our hotel and dinner reservations in advance, food was great, everything was on schedule. Sprinter van was new and clean for our travels. Excellent trip for us start to finish!! Thanks again John and Nicola! We will be back…
