Winter Golf Trips in Scotland – Pros, Cons, and Tips
Summer might steal the spotlight, but winter golf trips in Scotland offer something special: peaceful fairways, uncrowded tee sheets, and incredible value. While the weather is cooler and the daylight shorter, seasoned travellers know that Scotland’s links courses are often in playable condition year-round. In fact, many locals play just as often in winter as they do in summer. At ProScot Golf, we help you make the most of the off-season—booking weather-friendly layouts, cosy accommodations, and warm experiences like whisky tastings and spa retreats. If you’re considering a winter golf getaway, this blog outlines the pros, cons, and expert tips to ensure your trip is memorable for all the right reasons.
The Pros of Winter Golf in Scotland
- Lower prices: Green fees and accommodations drop significantly during the off-season (November–March).
- Course availability: Easier to get on iconic courses, including tee times at sought-after venues like Kingsbarns or North Berwick.
- Quiet conditions: No crowds, no queues—enjoy the course at your own pace.
- Cultural extras: Winter is perfect for whisky tours, castle visits, and festive activities.
- Cosy atmosphere: Stay in boutique lodges, curl up by log fires, and enjoy hearty local food after your round.
The Cons of Winter Golf (and How to Manage Them)
- Shorter daylight hours: Plan early tee times—Scotland sees only 6–7 hours of usable daylight in midwinter.
- Cooler weather: Temperatures range from 0°C to 8°C. Pack warm, waterproof layers.
- Potential frost delays or temporary greens: Choose coastal links courses with excellent drainage (see below).
- Some inland courses may close or have restrictions.
ProScot Tip: We only schedule rounds on courses that stay open and in top condition through winter—so you’ll never arrive at a closed gate.

Read moreI will be shocked if John and Nicola ever receive anything less than 5 Star ratings. My mates and I were looking for the "bucket list" golf trip to Scotland. We got an itinerary with confirmed tee times and dining reservations a year in advance. The golf courses were Turnberry, Prestwick, Royal Troon, St. Andrews Castle, THE OLD COURSE and Carnoustie. Upon arrival John promised that if anything was not to our liking to call him immediately and he would look into it. We never got a chance to test out his promise because everything went perfectly - with several positive surprises. Thanks John and Nicola for making our trip memorable.
Read moreJohn and Nicola were perfect hosts. They took care of everything and it made our trip unforgettable. Their attention to detail is incredible and everything went smoothly. We had a guaranteed tee time for the Old Course which was the centerpiece of the trip. And they were very fun and nice people to be around. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a Scottish golf vacation.
Read moreWhat a perfect vacation with 5 beautiful days of golf. Nicola was great. She ensured we were in the Old Course balloting-system and that we were also checked in for the Old Course singles daily lottery. I was fortunate to secure two opportunities to play the Old Course. Nicola went out her way many times, including traveling back to pick me up from another course to ensure I made my Old Course check in time. She also meet up with me on the 18th tee to follow me in while taking pictures of a very memorable experience. ProScotGolf provides exceptional customer service and value. I will be planning my next trip soon.
Read moreI could not imagine a better managed golf trip - everything was first class... from the transportation to the lodging to the dining. John and Nikola were an absolute joy to coordinate with. John is a knowledgeable and hilarious tour guide - our group really enjoyed his company. John was attentive, punctual, and high energy. I can't recommend ProScot enough and I hope to use their services again in the future.
