The Best 7-Day Scotland Golf Itinerary for Groups of Friends
A week in Scotland sounds like plenty of time for a golf trip.
Until you start planning it.
Most groups of friends, especially travelling from the US, arrive with a long list of courses and not quite enough time to fit them all in. The result is usually the same. Too much travel, too many early starts, and not enough time to actually enjoy where you are.
A strong 7-day itinerary isn’t about squeezing everything in. It’s about getting the balance right.
Here’s what that looks like in real terms.
Start With One Core Region
The biggest mistake in a 7-day trip is trying to cover too much ground.
Scotland gives you options. That’s part of the appeal. But for a one-week trip, you’re far better choosing a core region and building around it.
For most groups, that means:
- St Andrews & Fife as the anchor
- with a short extension into East Lothian
This gives you:
- world-class links golf
- minimal travel
- variety without complexity
As PGA Professional John Scott puts it:
“If you try to see all of Scotland in a week, you’ll spend half of it in a van. Keep it tight and you’ll enjoy every round more.”
The Ideal 7-Day Flow
This is where most itineraries either work or fall apart.
A well-paced trip for a group of 4–8 golfers should feel steady, not rushed.
Here’s a structure we know works.
Day 1: Arrival & Settle In (St Andrews)
Arrive into Edinburgh or Glasgow and transfer to St Andrews.
Keep this day simple:
- check in
- stretch the legs
- maybe a short walk through the town
No golf. No pressure. Just settle into the trip.
Day 2: Warm-Up Round (Crail or Lundin Links)
Start with a proper links course that eases you into Scottish conditions.
- Crail (Balcomie Links)
- or Lundin Links
Both give you:
- true links golf
- less pressure than the headline venues
- a great introduction to the pace of play
Day 3: Kingsbarns
This is where the trip lifts.
Kingsbarns delivers:
- coastal views on almost every hole
- a layout that suits all levels
- one of the most enjoyable rounds of the week
For many groups, this ends up being the favourite.
Day 4: St Andrews (Old Course or Alternative)
This is your St Andrews day.
If the Old Course comes through, it’s a moment you won’t forget.
If not, you’re still in one of the best golfing towns in the world, with options like:
- New Course
- Jubilee Course
Either way, the day works because the itinerary doesn’t rely on one outcome.
Day 5: Travel to East Lothian + Afternoon Round
Short transfer down to East Lothian.
Depending on timing:
- play Craigielaw
- or a lighter afternoon round
This keeps the day productive without overloading it.
Day 6: North Berwick or Gullane No. 1
This is your second peak day.
- North Berwick for character and history
- Gullane No. 1 for championship-level links
Two very different experiences, both worth the trip.
Day 7: Departure (or Optional Final Round)
Depending on flight times, you can:
- head straight to the airport
- or squeeze in a final round if logistics allow
Most groups prefer to leave it relaxed.
Why This Itinerary Works
There’s a reason this structure comes up again and again.
It:
- keeps travel efficient
- builds variety into each round
- balances big-name courses with authentic links
- avoids burnout
And importantly, it gives the group time to actually enjoy the experience together.
The Role of Group Size
For groups of 4–8, this format works particularly well.
You get:
- manageable tee times
- smooth transport
- better pacing across the week
John often says:
“Four to eight golfers is the sweet spot. Big enough for energy, small enough to keep everything running smoothly.”
Where Most 7-Day Trips Go Wrong
We see the same patterns every year.
Trying to:
- include the Highlands as well as St Andrews
- play 36 holes multiple days in a row
- move hotels every night
- build everything around one course
It creates a trip that looks impressive, but feels rushed.
A good trip leaves you wanting more. Not counting down to a rest day.
Can You Upgrade This Itinerary?
Absolutely.
Depending on the group, we might:
- upgrade accommodation to premium stays
- add a whisky tasting or private dining
- include a second round on one of the key days
- extend the trip into Ayrshire or the Highlands
But the core structure stays the same. That’s what makes it work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for a Scotland golf trip?
Yes, if it’s planned properly. One or two regions done well is more than enough for a great experience.
How many rounds should we play in a week?
Typically 4–6 rounds works best. More than that can feel rushed.
Should we include multiple regions?
Two at most. Anything beyond that usually adds unnecessary travel.
What’s the best starting point?
St Andrews remains the most popular and effective base for first-time trips.
Build a Week That Feels Like a Trip, Not a Schedule
A 7-day golf trip to Scotland should feel like something you’ve experienced, not something you’ve rushed through.
The courses matter. But the flow of the week matters just as much.

Excellent
Just returned from an amazing trip. John and team took care of everything from trip planning, accommodations, transport, and reservations for a group of 8. We played 8 fantastic courses in 7 days. Hotel and dinner selections were great, and the transport was comfortable. The team did a very nice job making adjustments where needed (ie., flight delays, adding on rounds of golf). I would definitely recommend ProScot for your group trip.
