The Biggest Mistakes US Golfers Make When Planning a Scotland Golf Trip

Most Scotland golf trips don’t go wrong completely.

They just don’t feel as good as they could have.

The courses are still great. The scenery still delivers. But somewhere in the middle of the week, you can tell the trip hasn’t quite come together the way it was meant to.

And more often than not, that comes down to a few early decisions.

Nothing major. Just small things that build up over the course of the trip.

Trying to Do Too Much in One Week

This is the one we see most often.

There’s a natural instinct to fit everything in. St Andrews, the Highlands, Ayrshire, maybe even more.

On a map, it looks manageable.

In reality, it creates long travel days, early starts, and a schedule that never really settles.

By the time you reach the middle of the trip, the golf starts to feel like something you’re working through rather than enjoying.

As PGA Professional John Scott often says,
“If you’re moving every day, you’re not giving yourself time to enjoy where you are.”

Building the Trip Around One Course

For many US golfers, the Old Course is the main reason for the trip.

That makes sense.

But when everything depends on one tee time, the entire structure becomes fragile.

If it comes off, it’s a great day.

If it doesn’t, it can feel like something’s missing, even when the rest of the trip is strong.

The best itineraries are built so they work either way.

Underestimating Travel Time

Distances in Scotland can be deceptive.

Two or three hours in the car might not sound like much, but after a full round of links golf, it feels very different.

When travel is added on top of early tee times and consecutive days of golf, it starts to take its toll.

You don’t always notice it immediately. It builds over the week.

Playing Too Much Golf

It sounds strange, but it happens regularly.

Groups try to maximise every day. Two rounds here, an early start there, no real gaps in the schedule.

By the end of the trip, the rounds start to blur together.

The best trips usually step back slightly. One round a day, the occasional lighter day, and enough space to actually enjoy each course.

John often says,
“You’ll remember the rounds you enjoyed, not the ones you squeezed in.”

Not Thinking About Location Properly

Where you stay has more impact than people expect.

If you’re based in the wrong place, everything becomes slightly harder. Longer drives, tighter schedules, less flexibility.

If you’re in the right location, the whole trip feels easier.

It’s one of those decisions that shapes everything else.

Focusing Too Much on Big Names

The well-known courses bring people to Scotland.

But they don’t need to make up the entire trip.

When every round is built around headline names, you lose some of the variation that makes the experience interesting.

Mixing in lesser-known courses often improves the trip, not just the budget.

Leaving Planning Too Late

This doesn’t always cause problems, but it limits your options.

The later you leave it:

  • the fewer choices you have
  • the more you need to adjust your plans
  • and the harder it becomes to build something that flows properly

Early planning doesn’t just secure availability. It gives you flexibility.

Expecting It to Work Like Golf at Home

This is a subtle one, but it matters.

Golf in Scotland plays differently.

The conditions, the ground, the pace of play, it all feels slightly different from what most US golfers are used to.

Once you adapt, it becomes part of the experience.

But going in with the right expectations makes that adjustment much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the most common mistake on a Scotland golf trip?

Trying to cover too many regions in too little time.

Should I build the trip around the Old Course?

It should be part of the plan, but not the foundation of the entire trip.

How much golf is too much?

For most groups, more than one round a day across multiple days becomes too much.

When should I start planning?

Ideally 12–18 months in advance.

It’s About Getting the Details Right Early

Most of these mistakes aren’t obvious when you’re planning.

They only show up once you’re on the ground.

The difference between a good trip and a great one usually comes down to how those early decisions are made.

If you’re planning a Scotland golf trip and want to avoid the common pitfalls, ProScot Golf can help you shape it properly from the start, so everything feels right once you arrive.

Proscot provided our group of 4 an outstanding experience in Scotland and the trip of a lifetime. We advised John that we wanted a mix of golf and site seeing for our 2 week trip. He provided us with great options for golf, accommodations, points of interest for sites and restaurant recommendations. We ended ended up visiting 6 cities and playing 6 rounds and every booking and reservation they provided for us went so smoothly. Nicola also made sure we were happy with everything along the way and provided us with a point of contact for our whole trip. Our accommodations were beautiful and perfect location in relation to our golf rounds and things to do. Thank you Proscot for providing us with an amazing itinerary and something we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Just returned from an amazing trip. John and team took care of everything from trip planning, accommodations, transport, and reservations for a group of 8. We played 8 fantastic courses in 7 days. Hotel and dinner selections were great, and the transport was comfortable. The team did a very nice job making adjustments where needed (ie., flight delays, adding on rounds of golf). I would definitely recommend ProScot for your group trip.

Highly recommend ProScot Golf Tours to be your go to when booking a trip to Scotland. John and Nicola had everything set for us and John took great care touring us around for our 5 day bucket list golf trip as we travelled from Canada. John made us feel at home and we had lots of laughs along the way. We were able to play Royal Troon, Prestwick, St Andrew’s Old Course and Carnoustie. ProScot had our hotel and dinner reservations in advance, food was great, everything was on schedule. Sprinter van was new and clean for our travels. Excellent trip for us start to finish!! Thanks again John and Nicola! We will be back…
