Best Time of Year to Book a Scotland Golf Trip

There are two timelines when it comes to Scotland golf trips.

When you travel, and when you book.

Most people focus on the first. June, July, maybe September. But the second one matters just as much, sometimes more.

Because the timing of your booking often determines what your trip actually looks like.

The Short Answer

If you want a straightforward answer:

  • Best time to book: 12–18 months in advance
  • For peak season (May–September): closer to 14–18 months
  • For shoulder season (April, October): around 10–14 months

That gives you the most control over your trip.

Why Booking Early Makes a Difference

Scotland isn’t a last-minute destination, especially for golf.

The courses you’re looking at, St Andrews, Turnberry, Royal Troon, operate with limited availability and high demand. At the same time, the best accommodation in those areas is also being booked by golfers planning well ahead.

So the earlier you start, the more options you have.

That doesn’t just mean better tee times. It means better structure across the whole trip.

As PGA Professional John Scott often says,
“The best trips are built early. After that, you’re working around what’s left.”

What You Gain by Booking Early

When you plan ahead, everything opens up a bit.

You can choose the courses you actually want, rather than adjusting to availability. You can stay where it makes the most sense, rather than where there’s space.

It also makes it easier to build a trip that flows properly.

You’re not forcing connections between regions or squeezing rounds into tight windows. You’re shaping the trip from the ground up.

What Happens If You Leave It Late

You can still build a good trip on a shorter timeline.

But it tends to look different.

You might need to:

  • adjust your course list
  • change locations
  • accept less ideal tee times
  • or simplify the structure

None of that ruins the experience, but it does limit how much control you have over it.

How the Seasons Affect Booking

Timing your booking also depends on when you plan to travel.

For peak months, May through September, demand is highest. That’s when early planning makes the biggest difference.

For April and October, there’s often a bit more flexibility. Conditions are still strong, but the pressure on availability is slightly lower.

The key is aligning your booking window with your travel plans.

Group Size Plays a Role

If you’re travelling as a group of 4–8, which most trips are, early booking becomes even more important.

You’re not just securing one tee time or one room.

You’re aligning:

  • multiple players
  • multiple rounds
  • and accommodation that works for the whole group

That naturally takes more planning.

A Simple Timeline to Follow

If you’re starting from scratch, a rough timeline looks like this:

Around 18 months out, you start shaping the idea. Regions, rough dates, and what kind of trip you want.

At 12–15 months, you begin securing the key parts. Accommodation, course strategy, and overall structure.

Closer to the trip, around 6–9 months out, you finalise the details and logistics.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to start early enough.

My son and I took a wonderful Golf and Whiskey Tour in Scotland through ProScot Golf Tours Ltd. The proprietors, John and Nicola, did an amazing job planning and executing our tour. They recommended great golf courses consistent with our playing ability and arranged several personalized scotch distillery tours that let us sample some of the best scotches in scotland! We can't thank them enough for making the trip so amazing!

Highly recommend ProScot Golf Tours to be your go to when booking a trip to Scotland. John and Nicola had everything set for us and John took great care touring us around for our 5 day bucket list golf trip as we travelled from Canada. John made us feel at home and we had lots of laughs along the way. We were able to play Royal Troon, Prestwick, St Andrew’s Old Course and Carnoustie. ProScot had our hotel and dinner reservations in advance, food was great, everything was on schedule. Sprinter van was new and clean for our travels. Excellent trip for us start to finish!! Thanks again John and Nicola! We will be back…

Just returned from an amazing trip. John and team took care of everything from trip planning, accommodations, transport, and reservations for a group of 8. We played 8 fantastic courses in 7 days. Hotel and dinner selections were great, and the transport was comfortable. The team did a very nice job making adjustments where needed (ie., flight delays, adding on rounds of golf). I would definitely recommend ProScot for your group trip.

Our group just returned home from a phenomenal golf trip to Scotland, we played 12 different courses in eight days. John and Nicola and the rest of their staff handled the logistics of our trip with the utmost professionalism and expertise. Working with them was effortless and stress-free. I know that I speak for my group in saying you can trust John and Nicola to make your trip memorable. And a shout out to Patricia as well! To top it off, I made a hole-in-one on the fifth hole at Panmure!
