5 Must-See Attractions in & around St Andrews for Golf Lovers and Beyond

St Andrews, famously known as the “Home of Golf,” is a dream destination for golfers worldwide. After conquering the iconic Old Course or exploring the stunning golf courses in and around St Andrews, including Carnoustie, Crail, and Kingsbarns, you might be wondering, “What’s next?” Well, there’s no shortage of attractions in this historic town. Here are five things you must do in and around St Andrews, making your trip truly unforgettable.

1. Relax at St Andrews West Sands Beach – A Stunning Seaside Escape

If you’re looking to unwind after a round of golf, St Andrews West Sands Beach is the perfect spot. Spanning nearly 2 miles, this pristine sandy beach is famous for its breathtaking beauty and its appearance in the opening scenes of the movie Chariots of Fire. With 29 consecutive years as the winner of Scotland’s Beach Award, it’s a must-see for visitors. Take a leisurely stroll along the shore, or explore the nearby Eden Estuary Nature Reserve, home to various bird species, seals, and even kite surfers.

2. Discover the Rich History at St Andrews Cathedral – Scotland’s Lost Treasure

Step back in time at the St Andrews Cathedral, once Scotland’s largest and most magnificent cathedral. Although only the ruins remain, the site offers a glimpse into the grandeur of its past. The St Andrews Cathedral Museum displays an impressive collection of medieval sculptures, relics, and artifacts, many of which were discovered during archaeological digs at the cathedral site. It’s an essential stop for history buffs and culture enthusiasts alike.

3. Unveil the Secrets of Golf at The R&A World Golf Museum

You can’t visit St Andrews without immersing yourself in its rich golfing history. The R&A World Golf Museum is a must-visit for any golf enthusiast. Explore galleries that highlight the evolution of the sport through the centuries, featuring thousands of fascinating artifacts, some dating back over 400 years. The museum showcases the legendary figures who have shaped golf’s past, present, and future, providing an enriching experience for all visitors.

4. Reconnect with Nature at St Andrews Botanic Gardens

If you’re craving a peaceful retreat, head to the St Andrews Botanic Gardens. This 18-acre oasis in the heart of the town is a living research and conservation center. With a variety of landscapes to explore, from the serene rock garden to the colorful rhododendron glade, the gardens offer plenty of spots to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. You may even spot some red squirrels among the lush greenery.

5. Savour Scotland’s Finest Spirits at Kingsbarns Whisky Distillery

Just a short drive from St Andrews, the Kingsbarns Whisky Distillery offers an unforgettable experience for whisky lovers. Located in an 18th-century farmstead, this charming distillery offers a variety of tours where you can learn the subtle art of whisky-making. John and Nicola were perfect hosts. They took care of everything and it made our trip unforgettable. Their attention to detail is incredible and everything went smoothly. We had a guaranteed tee time for the Old Course which was the centerpiece of the trip. And they were very fun and nice people to be around. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a Scottish golf vacation.

I could not imagine a better managed golf trip - everything was first class... from the transportation to the lodging to the dining. John and Nikola were an absolute joy to coordinate with. John is a knowledgeable and hilarious tour guide - our group really enjoyed his company. John was attentive, punctual, and high energy. I can't recommend ProScot enough and I hope to use their services again in the future.

What a perfect vacation with 5 beautiful days of golf. Nicola was great. She ensured we were in the Old Course balloting-system and that we were also checked in for the Old Course singles daily lottery. I was fortunate to secure two opportunities to play the Old Course. Nicola went out her way many times, including traveling back to pick me up from another course to ensure I made my Old Course check in time. She also meet up with me on the 18th tee to follow me in while taking pictures of a very memorable experience. ProScotGolf provides exceptional customer service and value. I will be planning my next trip soon.
