Booking a Golf Trip to Scotland – A Step-by-Step Guide for a Stress-Free Experience

Scotland is the ultimate golf destination, but trying to organise tee times at world-famous courses, accommodation, transport, and experiences can quickly become overwhelming. That’s why knowing how to book a golf trip to Scotland properly is key. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, this guide walks you through every step of the process, from choosing where to play, to understanding how tee time ballots work, and how to make sure you don’t miss a single highlight. And if you’d rather leave the details to the pros, ProScot Golf specialises in building seamless, custom itineraries that take care of everything. Read on for our step-by-step advice on how to book the perfect Scottish golf holiday.

Step 1: Choose Your Travel Dates

  • Best time to visit: April to October
  • Peak months: June–August (longer daylight, higher demand)
  • Value months: April, May, September (great weather + lower pricing)
  • Consider major events like The Open or local tournaments which may affect availability.

ProScot Tip: Book at least 6–12 months in advance for peak summer dates.

Step 2: Decide Where You Want to Play

Use ProScot’s trusted course list to guide you. Here are some standout options:

  • St Andrews (Old Course, New, Jubilee)
  • Kingsbarns Golf Links
  • Royal Dornoch
  • Carnoustie Golf Links
  • Trump Turnberry (Ailsa Course)
  • North Berwick & Gullane No. 1
  • Castle Stuart & Nairn
  • Elie, Crail, Fraserburgh for hidden gems

Choose one region or build a multi-region tour. ProScot helps you link logistics easily.

Step 3: Secure Tee Times (Ballots, Bookings & Access)

Iconic courses like the Old Course operate by ballot (lottery) or limited advance access.
ProScot can:

  • Enter you into daily ballots
  • Submit advanced applications
  • Offer tee time access via partner allocations

We also help plan secondary rounds nearby in case of ballot misses.

Step 4: Pick Your Accommodation

Options include:

  • Luxury stays: Old Course Hotel, Trump Turnberry, Gleneagles
  • Boutique options: Marine Hotel North Berwick, Ness Walk Inverness
  • Great value: Ardgowan Hotel (St Andrews), The Station Hotel (Elgin)

ProScot pre-books your hotel based on your itinerary and preferences.

Step 5: Arrange Transport

Choices include:

  • Private driver (perfect for groups)
  • Self-drive car hire (for flexibility)
  • Group coaches (for corporate or larger group travel)

We’ll plan every transfer from airport pick-up to course drop-off—no sat nav stress needed.

Step 6: Add Experiences

Make the trip unforgettable with optional extras:

  • Whisky tours (Glenkinchie, Macallan, Glenfiddich)
  • Sightseeing (Edinburgh Castle, Loch Ness, Speyside Trail)
  • Spa days for non-golfers
  • Private dining in castles or fine restaurants
  • Photography packages to capture your trip

Step 7: Confirm & Pack!

Once your itinerary is finalised, ProScot provides:

  • Full travel schedule
  • Booking confirmations
  • Packing list and local travel tips
  • Real-time support while you’re in Scotland

All you need to do is show up and swing away.

I will be shocked if John and Nicola ever receive anything less than 5 Star ratings. My mates and I were looking for the "bucket list" golf trip to Scotland. We got an itinerary with confirmed tee times and dining reservations a year in advance. The golf courses were Turnberry, Prestwick, Royal Troon, St. Andrews Castle, THE OLD COURSE and Carnoustie. Upon arrival John promised that if anything was not to our liking to call him immediately and he would look into it. We never got a chance to test out his promise because everything went perfectly - with several positive surprises. Thanks John and Nicola for making our trip memorable.

John and Nicola were perfect hosts. They took care of everything and it made our trip unforgettable. Their attention to detail is incredible and everything went smoothly. We had a guaranteed tee time for the Old Course which was the centerpiece of the trip. And they were very fun and nice people to be around. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a Scottish golf vacation.
