For many golfers, the word “links” conjures images of coastal dunes, salty air, and storied fairways. But what makes a links golf course truly distinct? Scotland, the birthplace of golf, is home to many of the most iconic and original links courses in the world—from St Andrews to North Berwick. These courses are more than just scenic; they’re shaped by nature, history, and tradition. In this blog, we explore what defines a links golf course, what sets it apart from modern inland layouts, and why playing one in Scotland should be on every golfer’s bucket list. We’ll also introduce you to some of the best true links experiences you can enjoy through a ProScot Golf tour.

1. What Is a Links Golf Course?

The term “links” comes from the Old English word hlinc, meaning rising ground or ridge. Links courses are typically found on coastal land between the sea and inland farmland, often featuring sandy soil, rolling terrain, and natural dunes. This land was traditionally unsuitable for farming—but ideal for golf.

2. Key Features of a Links Course

  • Coastal location with views of the sea
  • Firm, sandy turf that drains quickly
  • Undulating terrain, often shaped by wind and erosion rather than earthmovers
  • Few trees—open, wind-exposed landscapes
  • Deep pot bunkers, often penal and strategically placed
  • Large, fast greens with subtle breaks
  • Variable wind conditions, creating a unique challenge each day
  • Natural layout with minimal artificial shaping

These traits offer a raw, purist golfing experience. Strategy, creativity, and adaptability become essential.

3. The Role of the Elements

One defining characteristic of links golf is its connection to nature. The wind, firm ground, and unpredictable bounces make club selection and shot shaping more important than power. You’ll find yourself using a bump-and-run approach far more often than a high flop shot.

4. Links vs Parkland Courses

While links courses are rugged and coastal, parkland courses—like Gleneagles—are more manicured, tree-lined, and lush. Links golf favours shot-making and strategy; parkland golf often rewards height and accuracy. Both have their charm, but links layouts connect you more deeply to the origins of the game.

5. Iconic Links Courses in Scotland

St Andrews Old Course
The most famous links course in the world. Rolling fairways, massive double greens, and a layout virtually untouched in 600 years.

Royal Dornoch
A remote Highland masterpiece with raised greens and sweeping coastal views.

North Berwick (West Links)
Combines playfulness with heritage. Features stone walls, blind shots, and the famed Redan hole.

Crail (Balcomie Links)
Laid out by Old Tom Morris, this Fife gem offers cliffside holes and a traditional feel.

Gullane No. 1
Set high above the coast, this East Lothian classic offers panoramic views and firm, running turf.

Machrihanish Golf Club
Located on the Mull of Kintyre, it boasts one of the most famous opening holes in golf—played across the Atlantic.

Why Links Golf in Scotland Is a Must

Scotland’s links courses offer a true taste of golfing heritage. Here, you’re not just playing golf—you’re participating in the origins of the game, where every hole tells a story, and every gust of wind becomes part of the challenge. It’s humbling, invigorating, and completely unforgettable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the difference between a links course and other types of courses?
A: Links courses are coastal, sandy, and naturally shaped, with fewer trees and wind-exposed fairways. Parkland or resort courses are usually inland, lush, and heavily landscaped.

Q: Are links courses more difficult to play?
A: Not necessarily, but they do require a different style of play—more emphasis on creativity, low ball flights, and adapting to weather conditions.

Q: Can beginners enjoy links golf?
A: Absolutely. Many Scottish links courses, like Crail or Elie, are welcoming to all levels while still offering authentic experiences.

Q: Does ProScot Golf specialise in links courses?
A: Yes. Many of our custom itineraries focus on the finest links layouts across Scotland, all tailored to your skill level and preferences.

John and Nicola were perfect hosts. They took care of everything and it made our trip unforgettable. Their attention to detail is incredible and everything went smoothly. We had a guaranteed tee time for the Old Course which was the centerpiece of the trip. And they were very fun and nice people to be around. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a Scottish golf vacation.

Short answer: Stop looking, and hire ProScot. They're the best.

Longer answer: We recommend ProScot to everyone planning a UK/Ireland golf trip. We had three golf days over four nights in St Andrews. ProScot reserved a perfect short-term rental (all the amenities, perfect location, surprisingly low price), and secured tee times at the St Andrews Old, New, and Castle courses.

Nicola waited at Edinburgh airport for our delayed arriving flight, and drove us to St Andrews in ProScot's luxury van, with water and snacks. And even though our apartment was about a 9-iron from the First Tee, Nicola picked us up each day, took us to the practice facility and first tee box, and primed us with water and snack bars.

On the day we miscalculated the proper caddy gratuity and realized, on the first tee, that we were short on currency, Nicola raced to an ATM and sorted us out -- no questions, no fuss. Just fixing whatever needs fixing, with grace, and no stress.

When we played the Castle Course, our driver -- John -- regaled us with stories that only PGA Professionals possess, then gave us a couple incredibly useful tips at the practice facility.

After the trip we thought we had missed, or owed, an additional payment to ProScot. Nope. We had paid in full what they charged. Best value ever.
